The Indiana Blood Center Transfusion Medicine Education program, specializing in Blood Banking (TME-SBB) was established in 2005 to provide a comprehensive educational program in transfusion medicine. This program provides in-depth training in all aspects of blood banking including, blood procurement and product manufacturing, immunohematology and specialized laboratory testing, transfusion medicine practice, quality systems and process control, education and research, management and administration.
The Transfusion Medicine Education program, specializing in Blood Banking is 12 months long, offered at $3,000 per participant. This program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) upon the recommendation of American Association of Blood Banks (AABB) Committee on Accreditation.
A certified Specialist in Blood Banking is someone with educational and work experience qualifications who successfully passes the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) board of registry examination. This participant will have advanced knowledge, skills and abilities in the field of transfusion medicine and blood banking. The prerequisite for this program is a bachelor's degree, however, a certification in medical technology is also preferred.
