Specialist Education

The Specialist in Blood Bank Technology (SBB) plays a unique role in the modern blood center and transfusion service. Skilled in all blood bank operations, the SBB may follow virtually any career path within the profession. SBBs are capable of carrying out all operations of the blood center or transfusions service, from the simplest to the most advanced procedures.

 

What is a certified Specialist in Blood Banking (SBB)?

Someone with educational and work experience qualifications who successfully passes the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) board of registry (BOR) examination for the Specialist in Blood Banking. This person will have advanced knowledge, skills and abilities in the field of transfusion medicine and blood banking. Visit the AABB site for more information.

The TME-SBB

The IBC TME-SBB was established in 2005 to provide a comprehensive educational program in transfusion medicine.  This program provides in-depth training in all aspects of blood banking, including blood procurement and product manufacturing, immunohematology and specialized laboratory testing, transfusion medicine practice, quality systems and process control, education and research, management, and administration.

The IBC TME-SBB is a 12-month SBB program delivered via distance learning. This program, presented by the Indiana Blood Center, is offered at a cost of $3,000 per student. The Indiana Blood Center Transfusion Medicine Education Program -SBB is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs upon the recommendation of American Association of Blood Banks Committee on Accreditation (AABB-CoA). SBB Program

IBC's distance learning program for Specialist in Blood Banking provides in-depth information regarding transfusion medicine to prepare professionals for examination and highly skilled tasks in the laboratory.  The pre-requisite for this program is a bachelor's degree; a certification in medical technology is preferred.
