Executive Staff 

 

Byron Buhner is president and chief executive officer at Indiana Blood Center. With over 32 years of service, 25 as president, Byron is directly responsible for the administration and operation of Indiana Blood Center’s locations and all related activities. His focus is on strategic planning, program development, capital acquisitions, policy formulation and special services. The blood center provides over 160,000 transfusion procedures annually and is also a donor testing facility for other blood centers, screening over 400,000 samples per year. Revenues exceed 60 million dollars annually. Indiana Blood Center employs over 375 individuals, each performing unique duties and responsibilities to assure a safe and uninterrupted supply of blood to 60 Indiana hospitals. Byron completed his Bachelor of Arts at IUPUI and his Master of Science degree at Indiana University, Bloomington. Byron joined Indiana Blood Center in February of 1982 serving as Associate Executive Director/ COO and Administrator of the Indiana Blood Center Foundation before gaining his current position in 1988.

Dan A. Waxman, M.D. is executive vice president and chief medical officer at Indiana Blood Center and is Clinical Professor of Pathology at the Indiana University Medical Center. Dr. Waxman is directly responsible for all clinical aspects of Indiana Blood Center, including donor/patient services, transplant compatibility lab, immunohematology lab and determination of medical suitability for community blood donors. He is also clinical professor of pathology and the director of the Transfusion Medicine Fellowship Program at Indiana University Medical Center. Dr. Waxman received his bachelor’s degree at the University of Michigan, followed by a medical degree from the University of Kansas. After completing a pathology residency and a fellowship in transfusion medicine, Dr. Waxman held positions at the Community Blood Center of Greater Kansas City, BloodCare in Dallas and was the chief executive officer of the Southeastern Michigan Blood Services Region of the American Red Cross in Detroit. He is the immediate past president of America’s Blood Centers, North America’s largest network of community blood programs and serves as a member of the AABB board of directors.

Wendy Mehringer is the vice president of blood services and chief marketing officer at Indiana Blood Center. Wendy oversees marketing, donor recruitment, blood collection, component production, distribution and business development. The aligned arm-to-arm departments means expedited decision-making, shared management philosophy for Blood Services leadership and common goals for staff. The efficiency of the supply, manufacturing and demand functions ultimately contributes to the organization’s continued success. In her tenure, the organization has adopted transformational new measures, such as volume-based supply agreements with health systems; Bloodstream, Indiana Blood Center’s first transparency campaign; and I Pledge, an annual donation commitment initiative to engage volunteer donors/hosts and ensure a stable supply of right-type units for hospital supply. And, in 2012, Wendy led the effort to update Indiana’s blood bank law through the state legislature. With a bachelor’s degree in journalism and a master’s degree in public relations both from Ball State University, she earned a health systems management graduate certificate from IUPUI and became a certified health care manager through the Indiana Hospital Association’s Indiana University Executive Leadership Program.

Lora Vossen Poore is vice president of quality systems at Indiana Blood Center. Lora has been Vice President of Quality Systems for Indiana Blood Center since September 2005 and oversees quality assurance, risk management, training & development and clinical services, as well as the immunohematology reference lab and the HLA/DNA lab. She is also responsible for the Be The Match program, managed by Indiana Blood Center throughout the state. Lora received her bachelor’s degree in medical technology from the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks. She held positions as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist at United Hospital and the Grand Forks Clinic, before moving to San Antonio, Texas in 1988. Lora was an instructor in the medical technology program at the University of Texas Health Care Science Center and held clinical laboratory positions at Wilford Hall Medical Center at Lackland Air Force Base, before moving to Houston, Texas in 1998. Lora held the position of Quality Assurance Manager at Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center, where she also earned her Specialty in Blood Banking (SBB) certification before moving to Indiana where she accepted the position of Quality Assurance Manager with Indiana Blood Center in 2004. 

Tim Bryant is vice president of administration and chief information officer. Tim has direct responsibility for the information technology, human resources, accounting, materials management, project management, administration and plant services departments. Tim has been with Indiana Blood Center since 1997. In his past, he founded his own IT/HR consulting company, and he has taught as an adjunct faculty member for IUPUI. Tim is a member of the Society for Information Management, the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) and ASIS International. He received his Bachelor of Science in engineering from Purdue University, an MBA degree from Indiana Wesleyan University and is certified as a senior professional in human resources (SPHR).

Julie Cruz, M.D. is associate medical director at Indiana Blood Center. Dr. Cruz is responsible for clinical consultation in all areas of blood center operations, including donor/ patient services, clinical services, HLA/ DNA lab, immunohematology lab, determination of medical suitability for community blood donors and consultation regarding specific patient or transfusion medicine issues with medical professionals at Indiana Blood Center’s customer hospitals. Dr. Cruz is a past president of the Indiana State Association of Blood Banks (ISABB) and currently serves on the AABB Circular of Information committee. She is the program director of Indiana Blood Center’s Specialist in Blood Banking (SBB) program and a Volunteer Clinical Assistant Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Indiana University Medical Center. Most recently she coauthored a chapter on blood utilization management for Modern Blood Banking and Transfusion Practices, 6th ed. (Denise M. Harmening, ed., in press). Dr. Cruz received bachelor’s degrees at the University of Alabama and Manchester College, followed by her medical degree from the Indiana University School of Medicine. She completed a pathology residency and transfusion medicine fellowship at Indiana University School of Medicine and Indiana Blood Center. Since completing her fellowship in 2006 she has been employed by Indiana Blood Center, first as Assistant Medical Director, then in her current role as Associate Medical Director.

Jennifer Jones is the senior executive assistant at Indiana Blood Center. She is responsible for providing high-level administrative support to the president/chief executive officer and vice president of blood services/chief marketing officer. Jennifer also serves as assistant secretary on Indiana Blood Center's board of directors and oversees the daily activities of the other executive assistants. Jennifer has been with Indiana Blood Center since March 2008. She has an associate’s degree in applied science and over ten years of experience as an executive assistant.
