Roche and Indiana Blood Center Announce High School Scholarship Recipients

87 high school seniors ‘raise their sleeve’ to help pay for college costs

INDIANAPOLIS (May 21, 2012) – Roche Diagnostics is recognizing 87 high school seniors from across the state who participated in two Indiana Blood Center blood drives during the academic year and showed they have community service in their blood. Their efforts helped supply life-saving blood to hospitals throughout Indiana and earned them a $575 scholarship and red honor cords to be worn during graduation ceremonies.

High school student blood donations are an important component of the blood supply distributed to hospitals across Indiana, accounting for 16 percent of Indiana Blood Center’s donor base. Scholarship recipients are all seniors who participated in two blood drives during the academic school year either as a donor or student coordinator/recruiter. Each student plans to attend a college or university in Indiana and pursue studies in science, math, technology or other health-related fields.

In this academic year, Indiana Blood Center’s high school blood drives resulted in 24,000 donation attempts from high schools across the state. By donating blood, students learn the values of volunteering, community involvement and altruism. Roche Diagnostics funds the scholarships. Student recipients are recognized below and are identified by the county where their high school is located.
