Indiana Blood Center earned a distinction from the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) as one of four organizations to be honored with a specialty license plate in 2010. The plate will be available for cars, trucks and motorcycles beginning January 2, 2010.
The plate is intended for the organization’s volunteer blood donors, recipients, staff and friends to show their support for the goodwill act of donating blood and their interest in promoting the cause to others.
Indiana Blood Center’s application was one of four approved among 14 other not-for-profit organizations that applied with the BMV in March 2009. The submission highlighted the organization’s history, mission and critical significance in Indiana and included a petition document of support signed by more than 500 staff and donors.
The four selected organizations were those that met all elements of the evaluation criteria, which are:

Technical requirements set forth in state statute, regulations or the application guidelines.

Standards that must be met that demonstrate, among other things, an uncommon level of distinction and benefit to the citizens of Indiana that sets the organization and its purpose for the plate apart from others.

Proliferation considerations, including demonstration that the selection of a plate would not: open the door to a large number of other similar organizations, make proper identification by law enforcement more difficult, and weaken the distinction of existing specialty plates.
Specialty License Plates are available for a $40 annual fee. The funds serve in part as a fundraiser for Indiana Blood Center, allowing the community-based not-for-profit to be on the highways and backroads connecting more donors to patients in need.
